J FRIEND AND CO
(CHRISTCHURCH)
Jeremy Friend and his partner
Sharyn Woodnorth had always
loved Manuka honey, but it was
a fortuitive drive south relocating
the family from Auckland to
Christchurch that inspired J Friend
and Co. Sampling delicious honey
offerings from roadside stalls
proved irresistible and, by the time
they reached their destination,
the business plan was sorted.
“From the outset, Sharyn and I
knew we’d discovered a unique
culinary point of view,” Friend says.
“Those honeys already available
most often used pasteurising
creaming methods that stripped
out all the goodness and regional
distinctiveness as they were
blended together. We believed
that like us, once people were
introduced to the nuances of the
individual honey varietals, dignity
to honey as something beyond
a generic condiment could be
restored.” Now certified organic,
the company produces a boutique
range of single flower organic
honeys sourced from the New
Zealand landscape, and ships them
locally and in Australia.

FOR THE BETTER
GOOD (AUCKLAND)
Auckland-based water company
For the Better Good produces a
plant-based, oil-free, water bottle
that is certified compostable and
has a 78% smaller carbon footprint
than traditional plastic bottles.
The business is also the first in
the world to take responsibility for
its water bottles, post-sale, with
multiple end of life options and
a closed loop collection system.
Founder Jayden Klinac sees an
exciting future where businesses
can operate harmoniously with
nature. “Anything produced can
be reused or reutilised an infinite
number of times,” he says. “If
anything is lost it can become a
part of a natural ecosystem. Here, it
will provide a basis for regeneration
and in the future, we move beyond
something being ‘sustainable’
to being ‘regenerative’.” Klinac
says everything produced
can benefit ecological growth
and re-establishment, and
remedy the damages of past
industrial practices. “This can
only be achieved if we take full
responsibility for what businesses
produce throughout their entire
lifecycle. The plant bottle is our
first step towards this future and
our first commitment to a circular
economy.”
