Mt Difficulty Wine in
Bannockburn in Central
Otago has partnered
with STULZ New
Zealand to put its sustainability at
the forefront for 2019, and its new
state-of-the-art humidifier has been
installed in the winery’s barrel hall to
ensure that wines are cellared at the
optimum temperatures. The winery
was designed as a low energy input
facility, with the entire development
being houses in insulated buildings,
and the humidifier has been
designed specifically for the cellar
that is sunk below ground level to
enable stable and lower energy
inputs. When combined with an
external air heat reclaim system, the
technology allows it to use ambient
heating and cooling wherever
possible, which ensures that the
Mt Difficulty wines are cellared at
the ideal temperatures. STULZ
New Zealand general manager
Mark Langford says the technology
has reduced energy usage by “a
landslide,” and has achieved a
gold standard in humidification
processes for the winery. Mt
Difficulty winemaker Matt Dicey says
the company’s policy has always
been to maintain energy efficiency
and sustainability throughout its
activities. “By seeking a longterm
technology solution that is
innovative and ahead of the current
practice, we are able to achieve a
‘gold standard’ for humidification.
STULZ’s technologically advanced
systems use only 1% of energy
required compared to an equivalent
steam system. It was a no brainer
for us.” Known primarily for its data
centre cooling expertise, STULZ
New Zealand also provides energy
efficient cooling solutions to a host
of niche industry sectors from the
arts and education, to health and
aviation. www.stulz.co.nz
