CLEVEDON BUFFALO (AUCKLAND)
Richard and Helen Dorresteyns’ 150 head of buffalo have won them
gold yet again, with the company clinching the cuisine artisan award
for its marinated buffalo cheese garlic and thyme at the Food Awards.
The company uses the porcelain white milk to make mozzarella,
yoghurt, marinated cheese and ricotta. The buffalo milk is A2 and
contains significantly more protein and calcium than cow’s milk, with
roughly half the cholesterol. Those intolerant to other dairy products
often find buffalo milk readily digestible. www.clevedonbuffalo.co.nz
THE CROUCHER
BREWING (ROTORUA)
Born in Rotorua and loved all over –
that’s the mantra of Croucher Brewing,
which says every one of its beers is
an invitation to explore, a challenge to
never stop, a reminder that life is about
making stories and that great beer
is a perfect way to share them. The
company started with two guys Paul
and Nigel, both independent travellers
and lovers of beer who realised the
ideal place to make beer was their own
hometown – the notoriously aromatic
city of Rotorua. The idea has worked,
because the company’s Lowrider
brew clinched gold at the Australian
International Beer Awards 2018, with
its Ultra IPA and Moonride Black IPA
picking up bronze.

ALPINE ORIGIN MERINO
After five years of joint ownership between The New Zealand Merino Company (NZM) and Silver Fern Farms,
Alpine Origin Merino is now 100% owned by NZM. This means that the company now owns the SILERE
range of merino meat, and will continue to fund the development and marketing of the product in New
Zealand and overseas. “When we set out we needed to prove merino meat could be differentiated as a luxury
eating experience and value created in market could be delivered to grower suppliers,” NZM chief executive
John Brackenridge says. “SILERE alpine origin merino has been built into a successful brand and product
for the foodservice market predominantly in New Zealand and the United States.” Silver Fern Farms chief
executive Dean Hamilton says his company is focused on its Silver Fern Farms brand and looking to create
branded premium lamb ranges which are not breed-specific.
