OUTSTANDING COMPANIES
Innovation and sustainability are at
the heart of how Sealed Air New
Zealand approaches the future, and
the company says to ‘watch this
space’ after winning a gold medal at
the WorldStar Awards for 2018 for
its Fresh Technologies and Cryovac
Freshness Plus design. Vice president
for Australia, New Zealand, Japan and
Korea Kevin Piccione says the gold
medal in the ‘Packaging that Saves
Food Waste’ category is exciting for
the company. “We were thrilled to
win such prestigious recognition
for a product which truly made a
difference to our customer Fresh
Technologies, extending shelf life of
its guacamole product from 30 to
90 days. This new film technology
utilises active as opposed to passive
barrier components in the packaging
structure to achieve this three-fold
shelf life extension. It addresses the
reduction of food waste, extension
of the addressable distribution area,
and has helped Fresh Technologies
grow its business. We love being
part of success stories like this
where everyone wins,” he says.
President of food care Karl Deily
says the company has won five
awards around the world in the
past few months. “This multicountry
recognition of our products
and technologies showcases
how our solutions can help solve
problems like food waste and
food safety, and at the same time
help our customers reduce their
own impact to the environment.”
The company also won a process
award at the 2018 Packaging &
Processing Innovation & Design
Awards for its Nourish Sweet Chilli
Jerky packaging, which the judges
described as “well printed, perfect
registration and excellent colour
balance.”
SEALED AIR
FOOD SAFETY IS
A NO. 1 PRIORITY
Consumers need to be confident
the food they will eat and feed
to their children and pets is not
harmful in any way, shape or form.
Harm can come from a number of
areas, commonly being:
• Microbial;
• Foreign objects;
• Allergens;
• Cross contamination.
All food processors are HACCP
accredited or similar. HACCP
stands for Hazard Analysis of
Critical Control Points, which
exist in many areas of a food
processing plant. It is critical to
know where and what the Control
Points are, and put in place
the best possible management
systems to understand and control
these. Common Control Points
are cleaning, temperature of cool
rooms, and calibration of metal
/x-ray detection among many
others.
GMP & ‘5S’ assists with food
safety and helps with managing
it. ‘5S’ is one such management
system that not only aids food
safety but can deliver greater
efficiencies, less wastage and
greater output of quality products.
Cleaning is a Critical Control Point
which, if not done correctly, can
lead to microbial contamination
of food, and serious cross
contamination. What price do we
put on a product recall??
Wells’ most extensive and effective
range of detectable plastics also
help to reduce and manage risks
of foreign objects. Wells Hygiene
offers a free site survey service
where it will work consultatively
with team members to solve
problems and help deliver safer
products efficiently.
