REMOVE SLIP AND CONTAMINATION
RISKS UNDERFOOT
Thousands of injuries are
sustained from slips or trips in the
workplace every year. Slip risks
are often higher in the food and
beverage industries than other
environments, mainly because
of wet or greasy floors that have
been subject to spillage as well as
clean-up or washdown processes.
Facilities managers in these
industries have a particular need
to consider the specification of
flooring materials in order to
prevent or at the very least reduce
the number of slip accidents
amongst the workforce. Two
important factors should be
addressed when assessing a
floor’s potential slip risk; the
coefficient of friction (CoF) and
surface roughness. While avoiding

wet contamination is always
best, there may be times when
wet or greasy floors cannot be
circumvented, and therefore
reliance on a surface with an
adequate positively textured, antislip
profile is critical.
Seamless polyurethane flooring
materials have long proved popular
in the food and beverage sector
for this very reason. Textured
aggregates either incorporated
into the polyurethane matrix or
broadcast into the surface before
cure creates a surface roughness
capable of maintaining a sufficient
slip resistance performance even
in wet conditions. This can even
be adjusted to suit the individual
service requirements of the food
processing environment –a must
in areas which are foreseeably
contaminated with high viscosity
liquids including oil and grease.
Seamless polyurethane flooring
offers food processing clients
a number of other advantages
including high durability, excellent
thermal shock resistance and
excellent resistance to chemical
abuse from a number of corrosive
contaminants found in industry
processes including water, dust,
cleaners, sugar, sanitisers, acids
and lubricants as well as the
foodstuffs themselves. A further
innovation involves the use of
antimicrobial additives, which are
homogenously mixed within the
polyurethane resin in order to proactively
assist with microbiological
contamination strategies.
These additives help to prohibit
the growth of bacteria, mould
and mildew and can destroy up to
99.9% of all microbes landing on
the surface of the floor.
Flowcrete is Australasia’s leading
manufacturer of seamless
resin-based flooring materials.
Flowcrete’s HACCP internationally
certified Flowfresh antimicrobial
polyurethane flooring range
contains Polygiene –a natural
silver-based antimicrobial additive
that destroys up to 99.9% of
surface bacteria. The system is
available with adjustable anti-slip
profile to offer the safest, most
hygienic platform for the food
environment underfoot.
