ON A NEW PATH (FONTERRA)
Dairy giant Fonterra has made some massive strides as it re-invests itself within the confines of a carbon-free
future. Opening its farmers gates to the public to show what and how milk is being produced is nothing short of
genius – people able to see the actual families and people producing a product that the New Zealand economy
relies heavily on. Earlier this year giant Fonterra unveiled a new strategy based on concentrating on its more
successful ventures closer to home. The world's largest dairy exporter plans to phase out overseas milk pools,
cut debt and concentrate on its local production. The group also plans to focus on supplying dairy ingredients to
global customers and build its business into foodservice in Asia Pacific. Ceo Miles Hurrell says Fonterra would
be a "leaner, more focused business" under its new strategy. Hurrell says 2019 was "incredibly tough" for the
cooperative but it was also the year Fonterra made decisions to set it up for future success. www.fonterra.com
COMPANY
FOCUS
TASTE OF SWEET
SUCCESS (RJ'S)
Kiwi confectionery company RJ's took
over the manufacture and production
of Jaffas from Mondelēz International,
meaning the iconic lollies are being
made at RJ’s sister company
Darrell Lea’s factory in Sydney until
production is returned to New Zealand
when capacity is increased in the
company’s Levin factory. RJ’s is
producing the Jaffas under a licence
agreement with Mondelez, and sales
director Amy Law says consumers
should not notice any taste difference.
“It's really important to try and keep
iconic brands in New Zealand,” Law
says. “Jaffas have been around for
a long time so what we want to do
is keep that brand here.” RJ's was
set up 23 years ago by Law’s father
Roger Halliwell and is now owned
by Australian investment company
Quadrant Private Equity. The company
announced earlier last year that it
had signed a conditional agreement
to take over a few New Zealand
brands - such as Heards, Fabulicious,
Oddfelows and Mackintosh - from
Nestle. www.rjslicorice.co.nz
