PEOPLE
TO KNOW
SIMON GAULT
(FOOD ENTREPRENEUR)
Gault’s name is coupled with food shows,
competitions, television and restaurants in
general, but there’s more to his activities than
that. His company Five Percent is the trading
company for Simon Gault Home Cuisine brand
of stocks and seasonings, which boasts a vast
line-up of cooking products for chicken, beef,
vegetable, fish and lamb, inspired by what
is used in Italy, India, Morocco and Mexico.
His latest addition is Gault’s Tomato Ketchup,
which is made using vegetables and tomatoes
sourced from New Zealand’s back yard – what
he called a world-first tomato sauce that is
sweetened only with 100% vegetables. “We
don’t add any artificial or flavour-tainting natural
sweeteners like stevia to it, so you can feel
good about eating ketchup without sacrificing
deliciousness,” he says. “It’s taken me three
years to make great-tasting tomato ketchup –
now that’s gotta be a good thing, right?”

Simon Gourley
(DOMAINE THOMSON)
Simon Gourley was the Bayer Young Viticulturist of the Year 2019. Simon was representing
Central Otago and is Viticulturist at Domaine Thomson. Simon not only takes out the title of Bayer
Young Viticulturist of the Year 2019 but takes home a fantastic prize package of a Hyundai Kona
for a year, a $5000 Ecotrellis Travel Grant, Bahco golden secateurs, a leadership week and cash.
VLATKO MATERIC
(HOT LIME LABS)
Hot Lime Labs is a spinout from Callaghan
Innovation, where Materic had been working on
ways to extract CO2 from industrial combustion
gas using heated limestone. His research initially
focused on reducing pollution from power plants,
until he realised the economics were inverted –
while power plants don’t necessarily want to pay
money to emit less CO2, greenhouse growers
have a large unmet need for CO2. Hot Lime Labs
raised capital in late 2017 to bring this opportunity
to fruition, with a pilot (1/4 scale) plant to be
installed at a commercial capsicum grower at the
end of 2018. Mareric’s system will help growers
enrich the greenhouse atmosphere, allowing them
to boost yields by up to 20% in a sustainable and
cost-effective way.
