Marshall is a biotechnologist and chemical engineer
with a career spanning a range of primary industries
including dairy, fruit, arable, meat and seafood.
Previous roles include managing director of ViaLactia
Biosciences, group director R&D of the New Zealand
Dairy Board and chief executive of the New Zealand
Dairy Research Institute (now Fonterra Research
Centre). Marshall currently serves on a number of
boards and committees: Riddet CoRE (chair);
Food Industry Enabling Technologies
(chair); Industry Advisory Panel for
the High Value Nutrition National
Science Challenge (chair);
Bioresource Processing
Alliance; Seafood
SAM BUCKLE

Research Strategic Research Committee. He is a
past member of the Investment Advisory Panel of the
Primary Growth Partnership, and the board of Plant
and Food Research. A Fellow of the New Zealand
Institute of Chemistry and a Fellow of the New
Zealand Institute of Food Science and Technology
(NZIFST), Marshall is an Honorary Member of
the International Dairy Federation (IDF), past president
of the Coordination Committee and vice chairman
of the Codex Milk Committee. In 2016 he was
awarded the IDF Award, which recognises remarkable
contributions to progress in dairying worldwide.

Deputy secretary, resource efficiency - Ministry for the
Environment, Sam Buckle leads the Ministry’s resource
efficiency programme.
Buckle’s extensive career includes both commercial sector
and government work, including at Fonterra and within the
Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet.

DR GEORGE JOSEPH
(AsureQuality)
George Joseph is a qualified biochemist
with over 25 years of post-doctoral
experience in the field of analytical
chemistry applications and is the
Chemistry Technical Manager at
AsureQuality’s Auckland Laboratory.
In 2019, George developed a new
analytical method for determining total
amino acids in infant formula and adult
nutritionals which was approved and
accepted as the new international
Standard by AOAC International. This
is a huge achievement and signification
contribution to food safety worldwide, with
high relevance in the current market place
where food authenticity is at its highest
priority.
This new method will help manufacturers
and regulators around the world to ensure
that infant formulas continue to be safe
and provide the exact nutrients that are
required by developing babies.
