JOINS STUDY
A five-year project into malnourishment
of older people involving 24
scientific and nutritional organisations
will have input from Fonterra,
as the giant co-operative strives
to find answers for future food
products. The project is investigating
the role diet and appetite has in
malnutrition and functional decline
of people more than 70 years old,
and Fonterra director NZMP medical
nutrition Maarten van Beek says the
findings will help to develop innovative
new food products that support
active and healthy ageing. Almost
75% of older adult Kiwis are at risk
of malnourishment, and Fonterra’s
medical nutrition division is to develop
tasty, protein-enriched nutritional
solutions for them. As part of the
project’s food trials to assess taste,
and mobility and muscle outcomes,
research participants will add NZMP
protein-fortified products to their
regular diets, including a coconut
protein water, a chocolate and vanilla
pudding and rice pudding.
