Cable management
specialist Hellermann
Tyton says glass in
food products has
forced recalls from Asda and
Lidl, and there are fears the
problem could get worse as
the number of incidents rise
dramatically. In May alone,
glass contamination sparked a
recall of packs of chicken tikka
chunks, and a batch of mints
had to be recalled because
they contained small pieces of
metal. Hellermann UK product
manager Richard Rands says
contamination is an expensive
issue for manufacturers due
to product recalls that prompt
legal action and damage
consumer confidence in a
company brand. Manufacturers
need to renew their hazard
analysis critical control point
procedures regularly, and it
doesn’t necessarily have to be
costly. “There are a wide range
of products available to the food
and beverage market which
can aid with the prevention of
foreign-body contamination,”
Rands says. “By adopting these
where possible, manufacturers
can be confident that the food
products they are delivering to
the market are safe, significantly
reducing the risk of recalls,
and protecting consumer
confidence.” Specialist detectable
cable management solutions
such as metal detectable cable
ties and fixings, cable protection
systems, radio frequency
identification and printed
identification markers to help
prevent plastic contamination
in the production line can be
simple and effective. A number
of products from Welsh-based
company Peter’s Food Service
sold in Asda and Lidl have been
recalled as a precautionary
measure because of a potential
contamination incident. The
company says it did not believe
the products – including
peppered steak slices and chicken
and mushroom slices - have been
contaminated, but it informed
the Food Standards Agency
immediately and has taken the
small batch from point-of-sale as
a precaution.
British food and drink
manufacturers have
been chastised after a
surge of foreign body
contamination cases
in production
processes.
