WINE TANK
LEVEL CONTROL
Level monitoring in New
Zealand wineries is facing
a hot issue these days. The
movement towards a safer
workplace in recent times has
brought to light the traditional
method of climbing onto the
top of tanks to determine
the wine level via a manhole
visual inspection.
Anyone who has been on
top of a large vat knows it’s
high and does not feel safe –
particularly to those not great
with heights.
Modern automated F&B
plants use various methods
of measurement to keeping
operators safe while saving
time. Including instruments
based on pressure, radar and
ultra-sonic.
By far the most common
technology used these days
is pressure based, otherwise
known as hydro-static level
measurement.
By mounting a gauge
pressure level transmitter at
the base of a tank, the relative
pressure reading at this point
is directly proportional to
the liquid level. If the tank
top is pressurised. A second
pressure transmitter located
at the top of the tank allows
electronic compensation to
be factored in. Readings are
transmitted to a control room
and interpreted by a PLC.
This facilitates continuous
recording & simulated level
indication via a plant display
or Scada system.
“These days we have local
digital displays as a cost
effective plug-and-play
solution, via an IO-Link
Master. Transmitter signals,
including those from hard to
see sensor locations can be
viewed, making on-site visual
readings convenient & safe for
operators,” says ifm.
Typically, other instruments
are used to determine if a
manhole lid is open/closed
and the temperature is being
maintained within the correct
range, etc.
