Tons of sodden,
sticky, unhealthy
and potentially
environmentally
hazardous wastewater
byproduct from small-to-medium
enterprises are expensively
transported every day in
NewZealand to costly processing
and disposal facilities.
These wet cakes of byproduct
from food processors, kitchens,
manufacturers, farms and primary
producers can cost upwards of
$160 a ton to move by specialised
transport from the places where
effluent is produced, to centres
where compacting, drying and
disposal can take place in
controlled environments.
“Often this sodden waste has to
be carried away by road, because
many small to medium-scale
producers can’t afford to install
expensive processing, compacting
and drying plants at their own
facilities,” says Australasian
wastewater authority Michael
Bambridge.
“So, these producers use up
money, time and fuel they often
can’t afford hauling sodden cake
to facilities where it can be treated
and disposed of in a way that
