and waste collectively in a
project that is believed to be the first
of its type in New Zealand.
This ‘Sustainable is Attainable
Project’ has now identified three keys
areas of initial focus - biowastes,
plastics, and effluent – based on
the volume of waste, the identified
potential to create a local crosscompany
solutions, and the feasibility
for any solutions to be translated to
other regions of New Zealand.
Coordinated by the Timaru District
economic development agency
Aoraki Development for the South
Canterbury Food Processors and
Manufacturers Business Connection
Group, this project has nearly 20
companies involved, including
DB Breweries, Sanford, McCain,
Barker’s, Juice Products New
Zealand, Fresh Pork, Oceania Dairy,
Mt Cook Alpine Salmon and Bakels
Edible Oils.
The group is working with a
team of nationwide research and
development specialists and
agencies coordinated by the
University of Canterbury.
With the support of Callaghan
Innovation, three university students
will now be funded through their
Student Experience Grant scheme
to take a “deeper dive” into the
information provided to date, thereby
enabling the group to further refine
the scope of key projects.
“It’s unprecedented for such a large
group of companies to collaborate,
be so transparent about their byproducts
and waste, all with a clear
focus on a common goal” says Nigel
Davenport, chief executive at Aoraki
Development.
