Many businesses waste money and
emit excessive carbon by using
poorly commissioned equipment.
Businesses scrutinise purchases of
new assets; however, they are not
as diligent in checking these are
operating as intended, leading to
excessive energy use and associated
carbon emissions.
Emsol has seen businesses during
the past 17 years make energy
savings between 20% and 40%
by recommissioning, optimising,
or replacing their equipment.
For example, New Zealand King
Salmon’s site in Nelson reduced
its carbon emissions by 129,000
kg CO2 equivalent per year by
replacing its coal fired boiler with
electric water heating.
Another common problem is
that equipment is often sized too
conservatively, resulting in poor
commissioning, poor efficiency
and excessive energy use. There
are hundreds of commissioning
checks and improvements
available for all businesses that
result in energy cost savings with
little investment.

Every day there are new challenges
and risks facing the industry in
relation to quality control and there
has been an alarming increase in
recent food recalls.
Delta Insurance, New Zealand’s
largest kiwi-owned insurer, has
released a comprehensive research
paper on food safety risk, following
on from the introduction of their
niche insurance offering for food
manufacturers.
“This white paper highlights recent
trends in food risk management,”
says Delta’s underwriting manager,
Dinesh Murali.
“We cover the latest tools that are
available to food manufacturers
so that they can minimise the risk
of a costly food recall. They make
hundreds of good decisions every
day and we think this research paper
will help them to make more of them
… as well as be better equipped to
deal with that one bad mistake.”
A common misconception according
to Delta Insurance is that food
recall risks are covered by general
liability insurance. Usually these
policies are very limited in scope
and don’t cover the costlier aspects
of a food recall, the financial losses
to customers of third parties, the
cost of environmental clean-ups, or
provide any assistance with crisis
management.
“It can be a time-consuming exercise
for SME businesses when they
need to purchase several insurance
products independently … and
multiple policies are usually costprohibitive,”
says Mr Murali. “We’ve
made it easier by putting everything
under one cost-effective package.”
