NEW KAWERAU PLANT
MILKS TECHNOLOGY
A new geothermally-powered hitech
dairy plant has launched
in Kawerau – adding a vital boost to
the town’s economy.
Waiu Dairy, originally Kawerau Dairy
Limited Partnership, operates a
highly power-efficient factory with
atmospheric control and ventilation
developed by Filtercorp Technical.
It incorporates innovative Filtalon
Aquavane Louvres, the new Filtalon
SIS-150 insect filtration system,
and stainless-steel Americanengineered
‘Twin City’ fans for fresh
air flow.
Waiū Dairy is the second
geothermal milk plant established
by Māori in the region.
By industry standards, it is small but
flexible with plans for 40 staff and
at least two driers processing cow,
sheep, goat and plant-based milks.
A collaboration between 11
local Māori entities, it is one third
Japanese owned through Cedenco
Dairy Ltd.
“The name ‘Waiū’ we interpret as
‘sustenance’,’” Chairman Richard
Jones says. “A main objective was
to benefit Kawerau’s economy,
which we have by employing
90% of our staff locally. You
could say Kawerau is now
partially sustained by milk”
