Schaeffler has
combined two of its
proven measuring
technologies to create
a new condition and
torque monitoring system particularly
suitable for rotary and
adjustment drives in the wind
power and shipbuilding industries,
in large cranes and construction
and in mining machinery with
turrets and winches.
The combination of Schaeffler’s
SmartCheck and TorqueSense
technologies – both of which
available throughout Australia and
New Zealand – was highlighted
this year at Hannover Messe,
which is the world’s leading trade
show for industrial technology,
attracting typically 6,500 exhibitors
and 250,000 visitors, with a strong
focus on Industry 4.0 technologies.
Schaeffler’s SmartCheck is a
compact, innovative, modular
online measuring system
for continuous monitoring
of machinery and process
parameters on a decentralised
basis. It can be used on
assemblies where such monitoring
was previously too costly.
Schaeffler’s TorqueSense torque
measurement module offers a
mechatronic solution that allows
applications and processes to be
monitored and controlled with significantly
greater precision, as the
torque is recorded right where it is
applied.

More than 40
Australasian hydraulic
service specialists
took part recently in a factory
tour organised by hydraulic hose,
fittings and engineering service
organisation Hydraulink to view
the global quality standards and
new technology of some of the
world’s leading manufacturers and
innovators producing for hydraulic
engineering markets.
Hydraulink principals Lee Short
and Noel Davies, as well as NZ
ceo Robin Simpson and Australian
managing director Denis Matulin
led the Hydraulink ‘Partner Factory
Tour’ to Europe to gain insights
into the top quality technologies
of its premium suppliers, including
advances in areas such as
couplings, lubricants, diesel hoses
and fluid power hose fittings.
The educational tour – with 44
stakeholders, including 16 distributors
– was one of the biggest
international educational events
organised by Hydraulink, which
supplies hoses, fittings, adaptors
and accessories to more than 400
hose service points throughout
Australasia, supported by mobile
units to provide 24/7 service from
a single contact point whenever
they are needed to optimise
uptime and ensure the smooth
flow of business.
Hydraulink itself is continuing to
invest in strong inventory of hoses,
fittings, adaptors and accessories
from premium suppliers such as
those visited over the eight days
of the tour, to ensure thousands
of customers throughout Asia-
Pacific are not held up by a global
shortage of hydraulic hose manufacturing
capacity.
“We are proud to say that our distributors
enthusiastically took the
initiative to share this opportunity
to gain unique insight into technologies
of benefit to their customers
in diverse industries,” says the
Hydraulink management team
after the mid-year tour. “It speaks
volumes for their can-do attitude
and dedication to leading their
industry that this diverse party
was keenly invested in expanding
their knowledge in a way that will
benefit their customers throughout
Australia and New Zealand for
many years to come.”
Included in the visit was a tour of
an innovative manufacturer that
has produced more than 500
million fasteners, registered more
than 80 patents and works closely
with customers to develop new
and innovative products. Further
highlights included visits to oil,
hose and hydraulic engineering
companies focussed on major
Hydraulink industry customer
groups involved in areas such
as mobile and static machinery
in industries such as construction
and infrastructure, cranes
and lifting, recycling wastes,
earthworks and civil engineering,
agriculture, mining, energy, oil and
gas, materials handling, ports,
transport, manufacturing, food and
beverage distribution, utilities and
public works.

The new combination exhibited at
Hannover Messe is one in which
machinery’s torque signal can be
used for both monitoring and for
smooth and precise torque control
and regulation of pull cables.
The combination system is
the product of the long-term
development partnership of
Schaeffler and Bonfiglioli, which is
a global market leader in yaw and
pitch drives for wind turbines. This
partnership led to the creation of
a compact Industry 4.0 solution
package, says Schaeffler.
In addition to the vibration
diagnosis system of the Schaeffler
SmartCheck detecting incipient
damage at a very early stage, the
new combination can detect and
limit peak loads and frequencies
using the precise torque signal.
“Using algorithms that are based
on their application expertise,
Bonfiglioli converts such data
into information throughout the
entire lifetime of a wind turbine, for
example. Thus, online reporting on
relevant performance indicators
is provided, for example including
the general “health” status of
the geared drives, possible
critical conditions, and abnormal
behaviour of the yaw systems due
to predictive monitoring,” says
Schaeffler.
