P U B L I S H E R ’ S D E S K
My name is Andrew Auton, I'm a 5th Generation
engineer to proudly serve Canterbury. We are very
proud to play an integral part in gun control in New
Zealand, knowing that every gun will be safely and successfully
destroyed on the Bulldozer Bender.
My Great grandfather was one of the town’s
blacksmiths of some renown; he wore a black shirt and
a white tie. We still have his anvil that also serves as the
company logo.
My grandfather, Jack Auton, passed away last year at
96. He built all the city’s fire escapes on all buildings
over two stories, and even patented the product before
moving into farm machinery.
My Father, Robert Auton used to forge crowbars after
school and he made the gates of Christ's College at 17
then attended the first New Zealand export fair in the
early 70's, and sold the first three bulldozer benders for
export, to Papua new Guinea at the show.
Dad gained agents for the machine in Indonesia,
Malaysia and Australia. We have sold nearly 4000 units
world wide with none returned. I've sold machines to
customers who purchased one off dad when he was
32, and it sits beside the new one I sold at 32, still
going to this day. It's the only machine available in the
world with CE certification that can bend three inch
pipe up to 6mm wall for its price range, accessories
and longevity, becoming a kiwi icon in the industry with
many sales coming by word of mouth.

AUTON
One of New Zealand’s newest
laws is being enforced by
one of Christchurch’s oldest
engineering firms, R & A Auton.
New Zealand Police purchased
a number of Bulldozer Bender
machines to perform the tasks
of decommissioning guns under
new firearm prohibitions.
R & A Auton has seen much
change… below is what Andrew
Auton had to say when NZ
Engineering News came calling.
We decided to meander down
engineering memory lane with
him…
In Christchurch for many years we were the second
largest structural steel shop, at 1 Barbour St. Dad did
jobs like all the seating at QEll for the Commonwealth
games, work on the casino and in many Schools both
public and private. He made the lifting platforms for the
Airforce to service Hercules Aircraft, and repaired Bailey
bridges for the army.
The first job I did after leaving school was erecting
Briscoe's Northlands. I proudly manufactured and
installed the handrails and bollards on the Christchurch
art gallery. We made luggage trolleys for Air New
Zealand and did work on the library at Canterbury
University, years ago Dad even installed the gantry
crane in the engineering department.
