BEER BETTER
THAN WINE
Hipsters rejoice - craft beer may actually
be healthier than a glass of red wine, a
new study has found.
Research by Associate Professor Mike McCullough from California’s
Polytechnic State University has found craft beer has health
benefits overlooked by drinkers. He says whilst red wine is renowned
for good health, craft beer includes niacin (vitamin B3) and
brewers’ yeast, which is essential for lowering bad cholesterol. The basic
reason why craft beer is healthier than mass produced beer is that it is less
pasteurised, he says. “Your instances of heart disease and your instances of
type 2 diabetes decreases on an amount that’s comparable, if not a little bit
more, than if you are drinking red wine.” Science has long said a glass of red
a day helps reduce the risk of problems including heart disease and dementia,
but McCullough says the health benefits of craft beers are overlooked
because it is associated with an unhealthy lifestyle. “You associate a beer
drinker’s diet with nachos and unhealthy eating habits but the trend with
more differentiated beer and higher-end beer is that you are eating it with
meals,” McCullough says.
WINE LEADER PICKED
MJ Loza has been appointed New
Zealand Winegrowers Research
Centre chief executive, and will lead
the organisation from start-up phase
to delivering on its mandate to carry
out world-leading research on grape
growing and wine production. Board
chairman Mark Gilbert says Loza is a
perfect fit to steer the development
of the Blenheim-based centre, which
has received $12.5m in funding from
the Ministry of Business, Innovation
and Employment over four years.“He
has a breadth of experience in the
industry, having held senior positions
in international wine businesses and
having an outstanding understanding
of the grape growing and wine making
process. He will lead NZWRC with
vision to the benefit of the entire New
Zealand wine industry.” Much of the
former solicitor’s career has been at
the interface between science and
commercialisation. Loza has held senior
positions with Deer Industry New
Zealand and Fonterra, general manager
for Accolade Wines in both New Zealand
and North America, head of Mud
House Wine Group (before the sale to
Accolade Wines) and general manager
for Seresin Estate. Most recently, he
has been general manager for Putake
Honey in Marlborough.
