EFFICIENT FUME EXTRACTION
SOLVES SMELL AND DUST ISSUES AT
AUCKLAND’S NIWA LAB
Laboratories and work-spaces
purpose-built for NIWA to
carry out their science in 2009
were struggling to cope with
the fumes generated before
NZDuct+Flex was able to help
with a solution: bench top
fume extraction.
While the work-spaces are
purpose-built, the central
CBD site is compact with
limited space available to
deal with extraction. When
Keren Spong, the Marine
Ecology Technician first spoke
to NZDuct, she described
the issues with the lab
processes, where marine
specimens are “fixed” in
chemicals. The assessment
of fish development and their
stocks is critical to NIWAs
work, however the fumes from
chemicals associated with this
work are hazardous to staff.
Last month, NZDuct+Flex
was asked to return to the
lab to install another system
to deal with the fumes and
dust created when specimens
are set in resin and the resin
is then cut. This dust is
extremely fine and needed to
be captured to further protect
staff working.
NZDuct+Flex has the largest
range of fume arms in stock
starting with the 75mm arms
with a 1 metre reach supplied
to NIWA, ideal for the small
area being worked. The arms
have blue powder coated
metal tubes (also available in
stainless) with external hinging
to make minimal maintenance
possible – these arms are
from one of Europe’s leading
suppliers and are incredibly
good value. The lab also had
a specialist Lab arm installed
in stage 2 last month which
NZDuct source from another
key Danish supplier Geovent
and these Lab arms have the
lowest pressure loss available.
With aluminium tubes, plastic
elbows easily taken apart for
cleaning, and a clear Perspex
hood, a Lab arm is ideal in this
environment. A mobile fume
cube only 90cm high was
tucked under the bench to
help extract and capture the
resin dust and, according to
Keren Spong, it is all working
well.
NZ Duct+Flex’s own installation
team has installed
hundreds of the blue and
yellow European sourced
fume arms for welding fumes,
including the largest 160mm
dia. with a 4-metre reach. The
new Lab arms fill a need for
small, compact extraction that
also blends in cosmetically
with a modern laboratory, hair
studio or similar. STAINLESS FUME ARMS AVAILABLE IN RANGE
