Farming...
By Ayla Miller, NZFT staff writer
the freedom way
Situated beneath the majestic southern alps, just north
of Timaru, lies a pig farm. But it’s not just any pig farm -
it’s a Freedom Farm.
Here sows and their piglets
are free to run around
together in the sunshine
and fresh air. There’s even
a special paddock called
the ‘maternity ward’ where pregnant
sows and those that have just given
birth, can rest with their young ones
and build up their strength.
This farm is the embodiment of
Freedom Farms’ core values.
Farmers Helen and Mark Andrews are
dedicated to ensuring their pigs are
treated with kindness and respect, so
they get the most out of life while they
are in their care.
At the Andrews’ farm, each sow has
her very own hut to raise her piglets
in. She is free to roll in as much dirt
as she wants, bask in as much sun as
she needs and has access to enough
nutrient-rich feed to nourish her and
her babies.
The concept behind Freedom Farms
is simple - happy animals make
happy people.
