The better by design
approach is well known in
product design circles. It
is also applicable wherever
new solutions to problems are being
devised. This includes nearly every
robotic or automated machine in any
industry, at any scale.
A clear example of where poor
design thinking in process
automation has let many businesses
down is when a robot is gathering
dust in the corner, after huge costs
and effort were put into building the
next big thing that didn’t eventuate.
The truth of the matter is that in
almost every case there is nothing
wrong with the robot itself, but
with the design thinking behind its
deployment. Designing for robotic
automation is very different to regular
automation, so it’s no surprise
some early robotic systems were
unsuccessful.
Over time New Zealand has
developed a good base of
automated machinery builders, many
of whom have adopted robots as a
core part of their business. Many of
the skill sets required are now taught
by our universities in programs such
as 'Mechatronics Engineering.' We
also benefit from immigrants bringing
their experience from countries
where large scale manufacturing
drives the development of high-level
skills in working with robots.
With the talent now available we are
in a position to use the technology
more effectively. Robots, cobots and
automation have never been more
sought after in New Zealand says
robotics company Design Energy’s
managing director Mike Shatford.
“We’ve seen a considerable surge in
robotic automation in New Zealand
since 2017. This is especially true in
manufacturing as companies look to
grow and improve their bottom lines.
Companies are seeing significant
improvements in productivity and
output together with cost reductions
as they use robots and process
redesign to automate their industrial
processes,” says Mr Shatford.
Design Energy says it is New
Zealand’s leading robot and cobot
provider, with extensive expertise in
robotic automation. The company
uses a design led approach in all of
its work and is involved with New
Zealand’s academic community
and government to encourage and
support the use of robotics as a
production tool.
