Is aluminium, cadmium or lead an
issue? Jost Chemical Company has
a range of fully reacted ultra-pure
minerals that can meet customers’
formulation requirements and has
developed proprietary technology for
manufacturing ultra-pure calcium salts
with very low levels of aluminium,
lead, manganese, iron and other
vagrant metals.
Aluminium is a known toxin to
the nervous system and has been
linked to Alzheimer’s for many
years, although this link is still being
researched. As a result of these
concerns, there is a significant
demand for materials with low levels
of aluminium, especially for use in
products designed for children and
infants.
Until Jost developed its technology,
calcium compounds with extremely
low levels of aluminium were difficult
to guarantee. Calcium citrate
typically carries aluminium levels of
approximately 70 to 80 ppm, but can
now be manufactured with aluminium
levels of less than 5 ppm.
Lead content has always been an
issue, with young children being
particularly vulnerable to the toxic
effects which can cause profound
and permanent adverse health effects
particularly affecting the development
of the brain and nervous system. In
adults, lead also causes long-term
harm, including increased risk of high
blood pressure and kidney damage.
For many years, Jost produced
calcium citrate at an extremely low
level of lead with less than 0.2 ppm.
Now that the improved technology
is in place, Jost can produce
materials with lead levels of less than
0.03 ppm, which is virtually nondetectable.
In some cases, the presence of heavy
metals also creates stability issues.
For example, in applications sensitive
to manganese, formulators have
detected problems with levels greater
than 100 ppm in calcium phosphates.
Jost’s proprietary technology allows
the production of calcium phosphates
with manganese levels consistently
less than 2 ppm.
What if you are developing a drink
containing ascorbic acid? There is
a need for materials with extremely
low levels of iron, because of ascorbic
acid’s susceptibility to oxidation, even
at low levels. Jost can meet these
requirements.
