SWEDISH
SYMMETRY
Most people could perceive
Good Idea as just another
flavoured sparkling water from
Sweden, but the product is far
from ordinary.

New footage showing
“shocking and
horrific” conditions
on ships taking
thousands of sheep to the
Middle East has outraged
the organisation. “Animals
exported alive for breeding
are all ultimately killed in
the country of destination,
potentially by methods not
allowed in New Zealand.
Many will likely suffer the
same welfare issues on
board shipments,” SAFE
Australia campaigns director
Mandy Carter says. “Live
export is cruel and unnecessary.
Any government that
continues to allow it, risks
damage to their international
standing. Exporting animals
overseas to set up breeding
herds, as has regularly taken
place from New Zealand, also
potentially takes jobs from Kiwis.
It is especially abhorrent
that this cruelty continues
despite the massive public
outcry across the Tasman and
internationally.” More than
4000 sheep have died in five
routine shipments aboard the
Awassi Express headed to
Gulf countries. The footage,
filmed by a trainee navigation
officer and released by Animals
Australia, shows sheep
and newborn lambs dying in
devastating conditions. Carter
says the ship is owned by
controversial Saudi millionaire
Hmood al Khalif, who has
links to New Zealand as director
of Awassi NZ in Hastings
and made "secret" deals with
the National government to
set up an agri-business hub in
the desert. Carter urges both
New Zealand and Australian
governments to take urgent
action to protect animal
welfare across Australasia
and commit to ending all live
exports. www.safe.org.nz
Check the supplement facts on the back of the
can, and you will discover that they include
a proprietary blend of five amino acids and
chromium, clinically proven to help the body
handle the blood sugar spike following an
ordinary meal rich in fast carbs…and the
result of years of research and development
by Aventure AB and Lund University. “We´re
on a mission to bring health to the table,”
Good Idea chief executive Björn Öste says.
“Many of the meals we eat, like burgers,
pizzas, fries and even sushi contain fast carbs
that turn into sugar in the blood vessels. In
the long run this puts a strain on the body,
and adding soda makes the problem even
worse. We see a trend coming, where people
replace their sugary drinks with water, and
adding the functionality of Good Idea, we are
at the forefront. The point of departure for
Good Idea is research showing that a blend
of five specific amino acids could reduce the
post-meal blood sugar spike substantially.
When a hint of chromium was added, repeated
clinical studies showed that the reduction
is an impressive 20-30%, and we realised that
we were on to something really exciting.”
The company, now based in the US, has also
recently introduced non-dairy Oatly milk
there. “Sustainability is all we are about, all
the way from promoting healthy and sustainable
eating habits, to the choice of packaging
material,” Öste says. “With recent studies
showing that more than 90% of tested water
brands contain microplastics, consumers are
seeking alternatives to buying water in plastic
bottles. We consciously chose aluminum cans
instead – a 100% recyclable material leaving
the content absolutely free from any contamination.”

KIWI SHEEP AND
JOBS ON THE LINE
SAFE is warning that meat industry jobs in New Zealand may
be adversely affected by what it says is cruel and unacceptable
handling of sheep being exported live from Australia.
CHRISTCHURCH VIGIL
Christchurch Animal Save has hosted its first ever vigil to encourage the public to boycott animal
products outside Silver Fern Farms in the city. More than 30 people attended the peaceful
demonstration, held to protest the slaughter of animals, but were met with a closed facility
with no animals present. Spokesperson Amy O’Brien says the group wants to help the public
make the connection between eating living sentient beings that are not just a “neatly packaged
product on a shelf”, and Silver Ferns “clearly had something to hide from us and the public.”
After the vigil, Silver Fern Farms resumed operating.
