but the foundation blocks for this success are still
factors driving the business onwards says David
Thumath.
“We are a full-on aluminium and tool service
centre – with seven saws and new racking
equipment. We have products that other people
don’t have especially Formodal which is a cast
aluminium plate from Germany that’s machined
to a 0.1 tolerance top and bottom, PVC-coated,
doesn’t move when machined and is very stable.
Stocked from 8-200mm. All our materials are
sourced from Germany; steel and aluminium. All
certified – everything has got a test certificate, and
traceable… you can come to us a year later and
track exactly, from where that material came from,
tests and all,” says David.
He says the company aims for a very quick
turnaround and that has played a significant
aspect in the company’s expansion.
“Sure, we get busy, but we make it a priority.”
He adds there are some subtle points of difference
that HGM has over the competition that in the long
run turn out to be very significant for its customer
base.
“We stock 6082 instead of 6061 in aluminium – it
is a more consistent anodising product that has
similar strength properties to 6061. We do 7075 in
round bar (25-250 dia) and plates (from 5-150mm).
We stock 6082 from 10-130mm plate and 10-350
diameter rounds. Tool steel, we have H13, P20
metal and plates, blocks.”
“Not many people have that sort of cutting
capacity that we have and it means that we are
able to service a large range of product which
provides more versatility for our customers.”
The purpose-built racking system with a vacuum
attachment on a dedicated forklift is not only very
efficient but also mimimises damage to material,
which is particularly important with Formodal -
there’s no mechanical handling aside from the
vacuum lift.
“We’re growing because we are doing things the
right way that fits in with the industry and what it
requires of us as suppliers to it,” says Mr Thumath.
“When we moved in here there was room to burn
but now looking at it we’re already filling it up fast
so that again reinforces that all our processes and
the way we operate are on track.
“It’s allowed us to have more cutting equipment
– I couldn’t have put a new saw in at the old
premises.”
He’s describing the recently-added Waytrain
WL-1180SAT, and he points out that he wouldn’t
sell something he wasn’t prepared to use himself.
“We’ve had one in place for eight years which still
cuts great and works really well but we introduced
the new saw back off that – we had no hesitation
putting in another one and no hesitation selling
them as they are a great piece of kit.”
The new saw has meant the company has been
able to increase the sizes of the materials that can
be cut and the quantity of material because “we
can buy now direct from a mill rather than having
to buy through someone else which gives better
buying power and that flows on to our customers.”
With HGM and CNC Direct, every need is catered
for.
