The Annual Christchurch Electrical
Industry Trade Show organised by
Master Electricians is returning to its
roots in July, following the decision of
the Canterbury and Westland branch to
hold this year’s event at the Addington
Events Centre.
For the last three years the trade show
has been held across the carpark at the
Horncastle Arena which ticked all the
boxes for a more spacious layout on a
single level but lacked the bustle and
character of the old Stewards Stand.
Site bookings for 2019 show have been
rolling in since the confirmation of the
Thursday July 25 date.
“This year’s show will continue to be the
premier event for the electrical industry
in New Zealand. It will be spread over
the two levels as before. The Master
Electricans Apprentice Challenge
Regional Preliminaries will be held at
the trade-show, so everyone will be able
to see New Zealand’s best apprentices
compete,” says organisers.
The committee has been monitoring
attendances over the last few years and
show a consistent 1100 to 1200 visitors
at each show. Because the space at the
Horncastle Arena was exceptionally
large, it seemed fewer people were
milling around but the numbers were
the same.
“This year we are looking for more active
support from electrical wholesalers to
ensure the best possible attendance.
Free lunch will be provided as usual
and we will have a great speaker for the
breakfast event.”
Shifting the event back to Thursday and
to the old venue will allow exhibitors to
have some light refreshments later in
the afternoon with customers, knowing
they do not have to pack up their
displays until Friday morning.

Horticulture
showing good
growth
New Zealand horticulture is well
on track to meet its goal of $10
billion by 2020. The industry was
valued at $9.2 billion in the year
ending June 30, 2018, up $400
million from 2017. The increase
was driven by a strong growth in
exports, which rose to $5.5 billion
from $5.1 billion the year before.
According to the latest Fresh
Facts, published annually by Plant
& Food Research since 1999,
horticultural exports tripled from
$1.7 billion 20 years ago. They
now accounted for almost 10% of
New Zealand’s total merchandise
exports.
Kiwifruit and wine were the main
drivers for New Zealand’s horticultural
success. More than a
third (34%) of the export revenue
is attributable to kiwifruit ($1.86
billion, up from $1.66 in 2017).
Zespri SunGold Kiwifruit has
proven popular in key export
markets. It now accounts for
around 40% of the crop.
