New general manager at ATNZ
Apprentice Training New Zealand
(ATNZ) has announced Susanne Martin
as its new general manager.
Ms Martin joins ATNZ in Auckland
after senior executive roles at Crossmark
and Philips in both New Zealand
and Australia.
Described as an astute leader with
extensive experience in developing
people, managing high-performance
teams and B2B relationships, Ms
Martin will be responsible for the
management and development of
the apprentice programmes.
“ATNZ is focused on adding innovation
and value to New Zealand businesses
and it’s exciting to lead an
organisation embedded in the same
values as my own,” Ms Martin says.
“Infometrics data shows us that this
country needs more than 5,500 new
workers in the mechanical engineering
sector between now and 2022 to
fill new jobs and replace workers who
retire or leave. So our work is incredibly
important.
“I’m hoping to take another step up
with the customer driven team, refining
our service while remaining
committed to being the premium
apprentice training resource for New
Zealand businesses.”
ATNZ is New Zealand’s largest employer
of apprentices in mechanical
engineering and related industries,
including automotive, manufacturing,
print and packaging. It currently
employs more than 380 apprentices
who are seconded to businesses
throughout New Zealand. Employers
pay ATNZ to host an apprentice on a
contract basis to work and learn. The
organisation has recruited 105 apprentices
this year and has another
50 vacancies to fill.
Spike in injuries cause for concern
The construction industry must
take heed of an unexpected spike
in serious injuries, says Site Safe
chief executive Brett Murray.
Figures released by Statistics NZ
revealed there were 72 serious
work-related injuries in construction
last year, up from just 45 in
2016.
Mr Murray says while the figures
were raw numbers, rather than
a rate, any rise was a cause for
concern.
“Any serious injury at work means
a massive impact on the worker,
their family and their employer.”
The spike bucks the general
trend of recent years, Mr Murray
says.
“Fatalities and serious injury rates
in construction have been falling
since 2013 and we hope that
these statistics are not signalling
a reversal of that overall trend.
Site Safe is committed to working
with industry to make sure that
the good progress we’ve been
making is not lost.”
