WHEN KIWI 'NO.8 WIRE' GOES
INTERNATIONAL
-I Steel Connections Ltd (SCL)
t warms the cockles when, as
an editor/publisher, you can
play some very small part in
a Kiwi company’s success.
It’s even more gratifying when
you look at what they have
achieved – often against the odds
– and you get those warm fuzzies
knowing that they are actually just
one of many Kiwi companies out
there making a difference, not only
to the local scene but on the world’s
stage.
And when it comes to SCL - for now
seemingly on the verge of international
success with a product that is
very much hush-hush - the above is
absolutely what they have achieved
and are about to achieve.
SCL has been in solid contact with
NZ Engineering News over the past
two months. Director Mike Fox
has a product on his hands that
he describes as a “construction
industry game changer” and with the
inside word it’s very hard to argue.
SCL has dreamed big in the eightand
a-half years that the product
has been in development. Those at
the company had a great idea – and
that’s where every invention starts.
Some 10,000 laboratory hours
in testing is where they are right
now; having done the hard work in
between the idea and readying the
product for market.
“The response we’ve had has been
amazing,” Mike tells me, having
thrown out the local launch in
favour of taking on the world. He’s
approaching the market with plenty
of stealth, but those he has started
negotiations with are describing the
product and the idea of the product
as something that the construction
world will soon not be without.
He says that what SCL has
developed will see Kiwi ingenuity
lead the world in seismic technology
and innovation.
“When something explodes like
this,” Mike says, “it opens up
an entirely different world with
completely new sets of problems
and hurdles to overcome, but it’s a
challenge we are embracing. We’ve
decided to launch through the pages
of NZ Engineering News when the
time is right, but for now we just
want people to know that something
very big is coming, and we will be
in touch with potential current and
future key business partners up until
the time we launch.”
Passing on SCL’s message is
a very, very small component
within a much bigger,
exciting product picture.
It’s something we as a
magazine would love to do
more of – promoting those
innovators out there that
are helping to change
the world that we live in.
All too often Kiwi’s
keep the very best
stories close to
their chests, but as
SCL is finding out
we’re pretty good
at keeping a secret
too, and we definitely
want to work closely
with companies
– Kiwi companies –
who dream big and
then roll up their
sleeves to achieve
the dream.
We have an amazing
engineering and manufacturing
sector here,
and it’s a sector that
will only get bigger as
higher powers recognise
the importance.
Don’t hide… shine. Just
like SCL.
