ALL GOOD BANANAS (AUCKLAND) 78 ANNUAL DIRECTORY 2018 WOODEN SPOON BOUTIQUE FREEZERY (MIRAMAR) Founded in Wellington in 2011 by Sharon Galeon, Wooden Spoon makes small-batch, handcrafted ice creams using high-quality, local and seasonal ingredients. ‘We set out to make ice cream that embraces the New Zealand spirit – a sense of adventure, nostalgia and pride – and also highlights New Zealand’s top-notch dairy and other locally-crafted ingredients,” Galeon says.” Ice cream should create new memories and jiggle reminiscence of times gone by.” www.woodenspoonfreezery.com GENOESE FOODS (LEVIN) Nine years ago, on the beach at Piha, three blokes had an idea. At that time, hardly any New Zealanders knew where their bananas came from, or how hard it was for growers and their families to make a fair living from their produce. Would Kiwis, they asked, get behind giving other people a fair go? Today, Chris Morrison (founder of Phoenix Organics), Simon Coley (ex 42 Below) and Matt Morrison (All Good Bananas general manager) can honestly say yes to that question. All Good Bananas has supplied more than 55 million bananas to New Zealanders…an amazing quarter of those to Wellingtonians alone. Kiwis, says Morrison, consume more bananas per person than almost any other country in the world, chomping through more than 18kg annually. By choosing Fairtrade bananas, New Zealand consumers have helped 150 Ecuadorian banana farmers in El Guabo (Ecuador) access development funding, he says, along with 2000 kids getting proper education, 8600 people getting access to much-needed healthcare, and the establishment a children’s special needs’ school. So how did the company convince Kiwis to pay $1 more for a bunch of Fairtrade bananas? “By telling a story of freshness – and fairness,” the trio say. www.allgoodorganics.co.nz RUAKOKOPUTUNA OLIVES (MARTINBOROUGH) Wind your way out of Martinborough and up through the Ruakokoputuna Valley…and you’re bound to eventually arrive at the Wairarapa’s most awarded olive grove.
