BATCH 10 (PUHOI) With the first plant-based milk powders range offered in New Zealand and Australia, Stir’s certified organic coconut and almond milk powders and pure, non-GMO oat and soy powders are revolutionary. The brainchild of Bruna Rodrigues, the products are rich in good fats and proteins – but they have never been near a teat. “Shocking right?” Rodriques says. “Nor do they have offspring to worry about…so far as we know, anyway!” The forward-thinking Kiwi business is on a mission to make people’s lives easier, with products and concepts that challenge the status quo. “We thought it was time to come up with an innovative solution that was delicious, convenient, environmentally friendly and actually good for you.” www.byharvest.co.nz/100-not-milk-powders 80 ANNUAL DIRECTORY 2018 At the end of a perfect day fishing on the Hauraki Gulf, a bunch of mates lit a fire pit and reached for the Kentucky Bourbon. One of them decided to combine it with some local native bush honey, and it tasted real good. Back home out the back of Puhoi, infusing began in earnest for Brent Robinson and Gordon McKerchar at a small brewing house (shed) and, in time, Batch10 (for wont of a better name) was developed… and with just one taste those gathered fell silent. The #1 premium natural honey Bourbon had arrived. The pair use bourbon from the United States and mix it with a dark smooth honey from multiple flora including kahikatea, rewarewa and pohutukawa, as well as manuka. “We do a filtered version,” Robinson says, “but most people find that it’s just not the same. They just shake up the unfiltered bottle (with the sediment); they love the velvety warmth.” The first batch went out at Christmas 2015…and was gone in a flash. Since then, the company has gone into full production, and is now available in major stores and restaurants. www.batch10.com FORTY THIEVES (HIBISCUS COAST) Forty Thieves is a small team of dedicated nut and seed lovers from the Hibiscus Coast working hard to deliver delicious and nutritious butters that New Zealand just can’t get enough of. The company mills, blends, bottles and packages everything itself to ensure top quality, and doesn’t add refined sugars, preservatives or other man-made ingredients. It reckons the carefully crafted flavours are wonderful paired with fresh fruit, wholegrain bread, warm oatmeal or in a superfood smoothie, although the team has been caught polishing off an entire jar with just a spoon! www.fortythieves.co.nz STIR (AUCKLAND)
