Technology for
intelligent sorting and
precise removal of
defects and foreign
material for the green
shell mussel industry.
BOOSTING THE QUALITY
OF GREEN SHELL MUSSEL
HAULS BY INTELLIGENT
SORTING
The green shell mussel industry
in New Zealand is reaching
new heights with sorting
technology ensuring superior
quality at the right price point.
Key technology offers a range of
optical sorting platforms to sort
with exceptional colour, shape,
size and texture recognition.
Multiple camera and laser
configurations are configured to
match each products requirements.
Sensors such as high resolution
Vis/IR, Tri-chromatic, or UV
cameras and IR or Fluro lasers
ensure even the subtlest defects
are identified and targeted for
removal, thereby increasing the
quality of mussel batches headed
to market or further processing.
Foreign material and bycatch are
precisely removed in real-time
with the intelligent ejection system
featuring precision pneumaticbased
valves - with exceptional
response time for pinpoint accuracy.
By utilising an optional three-way
sorting capability, mussels can
be size-graded into various shell
length categories, overcoming
the limitations of traditional roller
graders that only classify by shell
width. Sorting by length makes
size grading a breeze – far more
accurate and relevant when mussels
are sold in length categories.
Precious green shell mussels need
to be handled with care throughout
the sorting process.
The Key Technology sorting
equipment operates intelligently
and gently. Advanced objectbased
image processing allows
FMAlert to track foreign material
providing you with a digital record.
Unique to the industry, RemoteMD
proactively monitors the sorter
conditions and alerts plant
personnel to changes that impact
performance, reliability, and
maintenance. The web-based
diagnostics ensure the highest
sorter availability and productivity.
For more than 50 years, green
shell mussel farming has been a
considerable contributor to New
Zealand’s economy. Today, the sale
of green shell mussels for human
consumption is worth over $200
million, with most of that revenue
coming from exporting mussels. As
New Zealand’s major aquaculture
species, ensuring premium
product is crucial for the industry’s
suppliers who build their credibility
of consistency and quality.
