In her new role as a trustee on the board of 5+ a Day Charitable Trust, Lister hopes to bring a new level of scientific expertise to the organisation and broaden the skillset at board level. A phytochemical and health team leader with Plant & Food Research, Lister has worked with the charity for several years, and says it is doing a great job encouraging Kiwis to eat healthier. “Our knowledge about the importance of nutrients and phytochemicals in our diet only has an impact if people change their behaviour, and we know 5+ A Day is doing just that,” Lister says. “As well as doing the science, I’ve now got a fair amount of experience in communicating health benefits so I’m delighted to have the chance to help at a strategic level.” Lister is already helping develop new material for older school pupils, workplaces and online. The 5+ A Day logo appears on more than 600 packages and promotions, and research shows 94% of shoppers are now aware of 5+ A Day, up from 82% in 2012. www.5aday.co.nz JANE LANCASTER (FOOD STANDARDS AUSTRALIA NEW ZEALAND BOARD) www.foodtechnology.co.nz 67 DR SEREAN ADAMS (CAWTHRON AQUACULTURE GROUP) CLAIRE TURNBULL (NUTRITIONIST AND SPCA BLUE TICK AMBASSADOR) Lancaster took on her new role on the FSANZ board in the middle of last year, and was appointed because of her background in food science, biotechnology and strong governance experience – in particular her professional experience in food safety, food regulation and the food industry in general. The other New Zealand board members are Tony Nowell and Dr Andrew McKenzie. FSANZ is the agency which administers joint trans-Tasman food standards and is governed by a statutory Board of 12 members. www. foodstandards.govt.nz DR CAROLYN LISTER (5+ A DAY CHARITABLE TRUST) Having led projects focused on hatchery technologies such as cryopreservation and shellfish developmental biology, Adams has recently been appointed group manager to lead the team into a new phase of growth. First employed as a PhD student 19 years ago, Adams says New Zealand aquaculture produce is in demand. “Already, we see fine dining restaurants in all corners of the world serving our finfish and shellfish products; that will only increase as more people get a taste for New Zealand’s premium seafood," she says. "It’s exciting to think how exports might grow when the smart technologies we’re developing are applied. Industry will be able to maximise farm output and utilise recently granted open ocean space. For me success would be seeing the industry realise its potential through value-add, diversification and the application of new technology.” www. cawthron.org.nz ROB SCOINES (SANITARIUM NZ) As a child, Turnbull was taught by her grandfather to appreciate and understand the different ways in which animals are farmed, and the importance of knowing where your food comes from. “I am therefore in full support of practices that ensure animal welfare as a priority. Research shows that animal stress is a key factor that negatively affects the quality of the meat, so animals raised to high animal welfare standards and are well looked after result in better quality meat,” she says. Turnbull has been appointed an SPCA Blue Tick ambassador and will encourage people to take the high animal welfare pledge. A qualified nutritionist, Turnbull is an author, speaker and media personality. www.claireturnbull.co.nz Sanitarium Health & Wellbeing New Zealand has welcomed Scoines as general manager New Zealand, saying his leadership and experience in building performing teams and his long commitment to the company will be a substantial asset. Scoines has worked in a variety of roles in New Zealand and Australia, including accounting, HR, logistics and manufacturing. Most recently he was general manager for logistics, and says he enjoys a challenge. “I see leadership as a privilege because it’s an opportunity to positively impact people as they grow and develop, while they in turn make a positive impact on the business and the community.” www.sanitarium.co.nz
