DR TIM HARWOOD (CAWTHRON INSTITUTE) DR LESLEY RHODES (CAWTHRON INSTITUTE) Appointed Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit (CNZM) last year for services to science and marine farming, Rhodes also received the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) inaugural award for significant contribution to food safety. Rhodes’ work has revolutionised the management of marine algal blooms and biotoxins in shellfish domestically and overseas, and has eliminated the need for arcane mouse testing. She is internationally renowned for her research leadership in the fields of algae, harmful algae and the safe export of New Zealand seafood. Rhodes is co-leader of the CAW Nationally Significant Database (NSD) programme funded by MBIE, which funds the Cawthron culture collection of microalgae that supports research in New Zealand and overseas, including underpinning Cawthron’s Safe New Zealand Seafood programme. www.cawthron.org.nz Harwood is the Safe New Zealand Seafood programme lead and Cawthron marine toxin chemist. In 2017, he received the future development award at the Seafood Industry conference in Wellington, following a nomination by Cathy Webb from Seafood NZ. His team received the 'Seafood Stars' award presented by Seafood New Zealand to Cawthron's marine toxin chemistry team for developng an improved method for regulatory monitoring of paralytic shellfish toxins. Wann is a regular fitness and health commentator in newspapers, on television and radio, and has written several ‘no-nonsense’ books in the past decade. She shot to fame in 2015 as the health and wellbeing presenter on TVNZ’s Kiwi Living show, and was personal trainer on the health transformation show DownSize Me.
