CORPORATE SUCCESS www.foodtechnology.co.nz 49 A2 MILK A2 Milk’s net profit in the four months to October 2017 was $52.5 million – up 137% on the previous year. Chief executive Geoff Babridge says this followed a $90m net profit for the June year, which was 198% up on the previous year. The alternative milk company says its growth trajectory remains intact as it surpasses Fletcher Building and a clutch of other market heavyweights in terms of its market capitalisation. Babridge says the success of the company’s infant formula business, which now accounts for 72% of group revenue, came to $394m over the year, compared with $214m in 2016. In Australia, a2's Platinum brand is the fastest-growing infant formula brand by value, and direct sales of formula into China has increased significantly in the cross border e-commerce channels and mother and baby retail stores. The company has established a presence in the United States, with a focus on the West Coast and intends to expand in the second half of 2018. www.a2milk.com FOODSTUFFS Imagine 80 million non-recyclable supermarket butchery trays – they’d fill at least 14 Olympic-sized swimming pools. This is the number of trays that will be diverted from New Zealand’s landfill, thanks to innovation by Foodstuffs and Alto Packaging. They’ve developed fully recyclable plastic food trays, which are now used in 190 Foodstuffs (NZ) supermarkets nationwide – and are being rolled out to more. The new trays are 50% recycled plastic and 100% recyclable. Foodstuffs has spent a number of years working with Alto Packaging to develop the trays, engaging with Auckland Council and Visy Recycling. The bags have the potential to make an even bigger difference to New Zealand’s landfill waste. www.foodstuffs.co.nz COUNTDOWN Countdown’s commitment to environmental sustainability has seen the company reduce its greenhouse gas emissions significantly. It has moved to more efficient refrigerant gases and reduced gas losses; reduced waste to landfill; and is working to reduce truck fuel emissions, as well as trialling and implementing energy efficient refrigeration and lighting systems. Countdown has held its emissions to 1.8% of its 2006 levels, despite floor space increasing by 37%, and has achieved a 21% drop in electricity usage per square metre. Countdown’s Food Rescue Programme, which diverts food from landfill, also contributes to its emissions reductions, as well as donating approximately 509 tonnes of food to those in need. www.countdown.co.nz
