IP 69K
 STANDARD
 PUT TO TEST
 Instrument housing and connection
datasheets often state IP 69K these
days – but what does this standard
actually mean and how are the tests
 conducted? In brief, this relatively
 new standard was developed by
ifm electronic to simulate the harsh
 conditions instruments experience
in food and beverage plants, where
 hot chemical wash-down is routinely
 conducted.
By way of example, all ifm sensors
 and connector cables designed for
use in food and beverage plants
are tested in accordance with the IP
69K standard. The goal is to duplicate

 pressure cleaning conditions
 on a plant floor.
In the test fixture, the sensors are
exposed to a 80-100 bar spray
of water at a temperature of 80
 degrees Celsius. The duration of
each cleaning cycle is 30 seconds.
The test is performed at specified
angles using a spray nozzle located
at a distance of 10-15cm from the
 sensor. Ifm inductive sensors can
 withstand test conditions and are
 still operable providing 100% of
 their sensing range.
