52 ANNUAL DIRECTORY 2017 PROFESSOR STEVE FLINT (Massey University) Team leader of Food Bioscience in the Massey Institute of Food Science and Technology, Flint leads a team of post graduate research students studying a variety of food safety and quality issues, and has more than 100 scientific publications to his name. Flint is a past president of the NZ Microbiological Society, and the New Zealand representative for the American Society for Microbiology. NATHAN GUY (Minister for Primary Industries) Guy has a background in farming and local government, serving for eight years on the Horowhenua District Council and managing the family dairy farm. MP for Otaki, Guy was awarded a Winston Churchill Fellowship to study beef exports to the United States in 2000. MARC GREVEN Plant & Food Research) Greven did his undergraduate studies in tropical agriculture in the Netherlands, and joined the Plant and Food Research Environment Group in Marlborough in 2000. His current research looks at soil, plant and water relationships in both Sauvignon blanc and Pinot Noir, the effect of water stress on berry size and the potential influence on juice and wine flavour and aroma. He is an Adjunct Professor with Lincoln University. DUNCAN MCGILLIVRAY (University of Auckland ) McGillivray trained in neutron and X-ray scattering in the UK and USA before returning to New Zealand in 2008 to set up a research group. His current research is focused on understanding the physical basis of biology at surfaces and in colloids, and he is particularly interested in understanding the structure of protein aggregates in solution and how the structures of food systems respond to damage or stress. McGillivray completed his doctorate at Oxford University, and later served a post-doctoral fellowship at Johns Hopkins and Carnegie Mellon Universities, jointly with the NIST Center for Neutron Research, developing a biometric membrane system and investigating protein-membrane interactions. MICHAEL BRAJKOVICH (NZ’s first Master of Wine) Brajkovich has a Bachelor’s degree in Oenology from Roseworthy College in South Australia, is a member of the Institute of Masters of Wine in London, and a respected wine judge in both New Zealand and Australia.
