50 ANNUAL DIRECTORY 2017 ENMA MCCASHIN (Brewer’s Guild of New Zealand) The empty, dust-covered and somewhat dilapidated former Rochdale Cider factory that Emma McCashin and husband Dean entered six years ago in the hope of being able to again produce another batch of McCashin’s award-winning beer is a distant memory these days…thanks to hard work and determination that has restored the premises to its former glory and paved the way for the relaunch of Rochdale Cider and the emergence of Stoke Beer. McCashin, the president of the Brewers Guild of New Zealand, has always been surrounded by craft beer and her ‘honeymoon’ in 2009 involved moving to Nelson and “beer, beer, beer and cider” ever since. Her work as president means representing around 90% of craft breweries in New Zealand, working with legislation, education and lobbying, and running the New Zealand Beer Awards. DR TOM RICHARDSON (AgResearch) Chief executive of New Zealand’s largest research institute, Richardson’s background is in forestry research as a practising scientist and manager, and he currently holds a number of industry, science and education governance roles. Richardson holds a Bachelor’s degree from Bucknell University and a PhD from Pennsylvania State University. ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR BRYONY JAMES (University of Auckland) As Deputy Dean (Research) of the Faculty of Engineering, James’ research is founded in traditional materials science and engineering, with particular expertise in characterisation of microstructure and composition. She applies these tools and techniques to investigate food structure and properties, and has published more than 60 journal articles and worked with New Zealand and international companies. Her current research focuses on structure-property relationships in dairy food systems, the impact of food structure on oral breakdown, and microstructural engineering of chocolate for specific nutritional and storage applications. She also researches the impact of food texture on hedonic and nutritional outcomes. WHO’S WHO
