PUHOI VALLEY CAFÉ (PUHOI) ORIGINAL FOODS BAKING (CHRISTCHURCH) www.foodtechnology.co.nz 85 THE GREEN SEED (AUCKLAND) Mother Nature, says The Green Shed, got it right the first time, so we shouldn’t mess with it. That’s why owners Oxana and Steven – who created the idea of the company in the family kitchen in 2014 – decided to produce dried coconut chips made in New Zealand. “Every life starts from a seed: either vegetables, animals or people” they say. “The green colour symbolises health, organic nature, sustainable energy, harmony and fertility.” Its coconut chips were introduced at the Grey Lynn Farmers Market the next year, and the couple knew they were onto a good thing after a family summer holiday around the North Island in 2016 reaped huge interest from retailers. Today, The Green Seed coconut chips – offered in a range of flavours - can be purchased in more than 30 stores. www.thegreenseed.co.nz For the third straight year in a row, Puhoi Valley Café took out 2017’s premium ice cream category at the NZ Ice Cream awards…with its Chai Latte ice cream taking top honours and its Matakana Roasted Affogato Yoghurt ice cream taking out Best of Coffee category. The company also showcased its Puhoi Valley Lemon Cheesecake ice cream. The Puhoi Valley was established by Bohemians in 1863, and the company’s employee list of 80 people includes descendants of the original settlers from the Tolhopf, Bayer and Turnwald families. http://puhoivalley.co.nz/store/shop-cafe/ PANETON BAKERY (AUCKLAND) It’s a story of love…and French baking…and the love of French baking! Dominique Colombie learnt the art of pastry from his father, whose Patisserie Columbie was an institution in the village of Montesquieu Volvestre in southern France. The hardworking chef met his wife-to-be Celia Elder in Paris and, to cut a long story short, the couple set up their La Tarterie in Newmarket in 1986. Specialising in savoury and sweet tartes, the couple’s customer focus and quality baking made their café famous – there was often a queue out the door. Today Paneton is New Zealand’s leading French bakery, with new offerings including frozen pastries and ready-to-bake breads. Colombie is always looking to the future to improve systems and technology, but says keeping the business simple and concentrating on core products using the best ingredients is still a winning recipe. www.panetonbakery.co.nz One giant inflatable donut, two very impressive trophies and a crowd of 500-plus enthusiastic businesspeople combined to see one of Canterbury’s iconic companies take out the 2017 champion business. Celebrating its 26th year in business, the family-owned, wholesale manufacturer is a New Zealand institution with its range of cakes, slices, bites and donuts which are sold throughout the country and the South Pacific – as well as Air New Zealand, Singapore Airlines, Virgin and Jetstar. Founder and managing director Jane Mayell says Kiwi businesses are passionate, creative, resilient and innovative…and she couldn’t have made it without her 100 staff members. www.originalfoods.co.nz
