Today, the company makes a range of artisan hand-cooked crisps using potato, parsnip, beetroot, carrot and kumara…sourced from local New Zealand farms, all natural, gluten free, vegan, GMO-free and without MSG. Head cultivator Duncan Kerr says its new offering – a partially-popped whole grain corn kernel flavoured with either Marlborough sea salt or apple cider vinegar – brings a new crunchy taste sensation to the local market. Kerr won’t divulge the recipe, but says it has loads of fibre and is free of trans-fats. www.propercrisps.co.nz EPIC HOP ZOMBIE (AUCKLAND) HMPS (SOUTH AUSTRALIA/NEW ZEALAND) Epic Hop Zombie has won the Countdown Alcoholic Beverages Award at the New Zealand Food Awards 2017…and company owner Luke Nicholas is thrilled. “It is fantastic to get industry recognition beyond just the beer and brewing industry,” he says. “Hop Zombie has been such a huge success for us since it was launched as New Zealand’s first double IPA back in 2011.” Epic Hop Zombie was ranked eighth best in China and tenth in the top imported beers in the US’s Zymurgy magazine, making it the company’s most successful export. A Double IPA at 8.5% alc/vol, Zombie uses New Zealand and US hop varieties and a blend of English and German grown pale malts. This combination of malts and hops produces a beer with a pale golden colour and a huge tropical fruit aroma, with passionfruit, mango and citrus flavours. www.epicbeer.com ZESPRI (BAY OF PLENTY) A strong growth strategy and on track to more than double global sales to $4.5 billion by 2025, Zespri has been recognised in the 2017 Deloitte Top 200 Awards. “This is real testament to the great team we have at Zespri – passionate, dedicated people around the world who bring to life our global grower-to-consumer strategy day in and day out – and the long-term partnerships we have with our customers,” Zespri chief executive Dan Mathieson says. “Kiwifruit is big business in New Zealand but it only makes up 1.5% of the globally-traded fruitbowl, so we see huge potential to grow the overall category.” Innovation is key to driving growth too – the kiwifruit industry invests around $35 million a year in innovation with more than half of this invested in Zespri’s joint new varieties breeding programme with Plant & Food Research, developing new products to attract new consumers and grow the overall category. www.zespri.com Jabez William Wedderburn was a young man working in his family’s scalemaking company who, upon realising his brothers were going to inherit the business, decided to ply his trade in Australia, which he did in Sydney from 1896. Fast forward more than 120 years, and Wedderburn is a family owned business with 11 branches throughout New Zealand (and 20 in Australia) that is regarded as at the leading edge of technology for complete weighing and labelling solutions. Proud of its comprehensive network of sales, technical support, servicing and calibration, the company says that above all else, its greatest assets are its customers. www.wedderburn.co.nz How do you top off a great award-collecting 2017? By scooping the Stephen Moore Service Provider Awards at the largest food and beverage industry gathering in Australia…that’s how! HMPS – the South-Australian owned machine builders that operate in New Zealand – says the recipe for its success is remaining true to its values as a relatively small and close-knit team – and its position as the go-to for the food, beverage and packaging industries. Owner/ executive chairman Mark Emmett says he and chief executive Shaun Westscott are both directly involved in the day-to-day running of the business alongside nearly 60 engineering-minded employees. “It is a great honour to receive the Stephen Moore Service Provider Award and be associated with this prestigious event. What a great way to end of what has been a remarkable year.” www.hmps.com.au Services nz
