ALISON QUESNEL (NATURAL PRODUCTS NZ (NPNZ) 72 ANNUAL DIRECTORY 2018 KATE RADBURND (PASK) As one of New Zealand’s most revered winemakers, Radburnd never sits still. The first woman to ever clinch the New Zealand Winegrowers fellowship for her dedication and influence in the industry, Radburnd is head winemaker and managing director for the Hawke’s Bay Pask winery…and has more than 30 years’ experience in the male-dominated industry. Interested in wine due to her parents’ love for it, Radburnd wanted to be a scientist before dropping her studies to do winemaking. “Which I have to say was extremely fortunate and I’ve enjoyed every minute of it since.” Radburnd pioneered the Sustainable Winegrowing NZ programme, and helped Pask become the first vineyard and winery to be accredited. “I’ve spent all my winemaking career here in New Zealand, and have seen enormous change and growth. Winemaking is really interesting with technology, because in a lot of ways, a lot of very traditional techniques are used and it’s very gentle and minimalistic. And at the other end of the spectrum there is terrific new technology – filtration for example – that means you can reduce what you do to the wine. So it often ends up being a combination of old, more traditional techniques and new technology…and always evolving.” Her wines have enjoyed gold-medal national and international trophy success in the UK, Australia, Asia, the US, Canada and New Zealand. She is also a sought-after international judge. www.pask.co.nz To gain an unusually large breadth and depth of experience in New Zealand’s food industry requires personal insights from working for a wide range of organisations. Corporate affairs director (and former executive director) of NPNZ Alison Quesnel is one such person. Her career has included being international manager NZ, UK and emerging markets for Blackmores, chief executive of Business in the Community, and sales and marketing manager for Hubbards Foods and Taura Natural Foods. However, ask her NPNZ staff about her other activities, and they proudly tell you that Quesnel’s passion for the industry runs much deeper than just her work. Small and medium enterprises in New Zealand have been a particular interest for the past 27 years. Quesnel mentors for Business Mentors NZ, is a director of Business in the Community, trustee of the Equal Employment Opportunities Trust and is an appointee of the Ministry for Economic Development’s small business advisory group as well as the government’s food and beverage taskforce. Her past activities include representing New Zealand at a ABAC/APEC business meeting, trustee of Te Araroa Trust, judging the Westpac Trust Manukau & North Shore business excellence awards, president of the Export Institute of New Zealand (Auckland), chair for an APEC women leaders meeting, judge for the NZ Trade Development Board Export Award and a former executive committee member of the Bay of Plenty Export Institute. Quesnel has also spoken at numerous food-related conferences in recent years, including IADSA (International Alliance of Dietary/Food Supplement Associations), Complementary Medicines Australia, ARCS Australia, IIB, NZACR, Vitafoods Asia, and Natural & Organic Products Hong Kong. NPNZ is a national industry organisation representing New Zealand’s natural products, functional foods, complementary medicines, cosmeceuticals and nutraceutical industries nationally and internationally. Quesnel was elected to the board in 2007, taking over the position of executive director in 2013. During her tenure, the organisation has grown in membership and recognition, developing strong government and member relationships. Last year she stepped back from the executive director role to become NPNZ’s corporate affairs director, in order to enable her to focus more closely on NPNZ’s public affairs and government relations activities - particularly in relation to the Natural Health Products Bill. www.naturalhealthproducts.nz
