JOHN MacDONALD – FOOD AND GROCERY PIONEER The food and grocery industry will be poorer for the passing of one of its great leaders and mentors, John MacDonald, who died in October aged 80. Through his industry work and his contribution to Reckitt and Colman, RB - and latterly as a much-valued member of the team at BrandWorld NZ – MacDonald became the only person in the industry to be twice awarded the Grocery Lifetime Achievement Award. A former president of the Grocery Manufacturers Association (the forerunner to FGC), now chief executive Katherine Rich says MacDonald was inspirational, respected, a sought-after mentor and a “bloody legend.” TERRY MCCASHIN - MAC’S BEER 36 ANNUAL DIRECTORY 2018 MICHAEL SPAANS – DAIRYNZ One of the dairy industry’s biggest leaders, DairyNZ chairman and former Fonterra director Michael Spaans, died in November after a long illness. The Te Aroha dairy farmer had been a DairyNZ board member since 2008, and elected chairman in 2015 – stepping down early last year. His farming interests were spread across the South Island, Chile and the US. Spaans grew up in Tauhei near Morrinsville and took over his parents’ farm at Manawaru, where he lived until his death. A keen basketballer, the 6’9” farmer got into governance around the time of Fonterra’s creation and served on the NZ Dairy Group, ASB Bank, Waikato Innovation Park, Ospri NZ, Manuka SA and Innovation Waikato. He remained an ambassador for Fonterra on the international stage, recently speaking at the United Nations in New York on behalf of the Global Dairy Platform and all farmers. Federated Farmers dairy chairman Chris Lewis says his friend was pragmatic and motivated. “He was like a big tall kauri amongst the forest. He stood above (us) not just in height but in his leadership style.” Spans was 54. TUI FLOWER – CHEF Tui Flower, one of New Zealand’s most beloved celebrity cooks, died at the age of 91 in August. She grew up in Matamata, was awarded a scholarship to study cooking in Paris for a year in her youth, was appointed food editor of New Zealand Woman's Weekly in the late 1960s (where she ran the test kitchen for 20 years, creating recipes for New Zealand housewives to cut out and keep) and was the founding chairwoman and life member of the NZ Guild of Food Writers. She wrote several cookbooks, and released her autobiography Self Raising Flower in 1998. SIR PATRICK GOODMAN – GOODMAN FIELDER Flags flew at half-mast at Goodman Fielder factories and offices up and down the country when food industry giant Sir Pat Goodman died in October in his late 80s. Sir Pat was knighted in 1995, and was the founding chairman of Quality Bakers New Zealand, which later became Goodman Fielder Wattie in 1987. The businessman, arts patron and philanthropist was chief executive and chairman of the trans-Tasman food giant until retiring in 1993. His family is estimated to be worth $1.47b, with Sir Pat building up a $2000 investment in a Motueka bakery into a multi-billion-dollar company. Former All Black and craft beer pioneer Terry McCashin will be remembered as a humble gentleman who took on the big brewers from a small Nelson factory. The founder of the Mac's beer brand and former All Black hooker died in November at the age of 73. McCashin is credited with starting the craft beer revolution in New Zealand, while competing with the brewing duopoly of Lion Nathan and Dominion Breweries. The McCashin family took over the Rochdale Cider factory on Main Road in Stoke in 1980. In 1999 the Mac's brand was sold to giant brewery Lion. SIR DOUG MYERS – LION BREWERIES AND LION NATHAN Sir Douglas Myers was 78 when he passed away in April. One of New Zealand’s most prominent businessmen, Sir Doug worked his way up through Lion Nathan to build a personal fortune estimated at $900m. He was knighted in 2010 for services to business and the community. Myers devoted much of his time to supporting the reforms begun in 1984 by the f ourth Labour Government. SPECIAL NOTE MemoriamIn
