PROFESSOR CONRAD PERERA (University of Auckland) After receiving his PhD in Food Science and Technology from Oregon State University, Perera was appointed Professor at the State University of Londrina in Brazil to set up a post graduate degree programme with other academic staff. He immigrated to New Zealand to take up a role as the Technical and Product Development Manager at Hansells (NZ) Ltd, and in 2000 joined the National University of Singapore to help set up a Food Science and Technology programme there. On his return to New Zealand he was offered a professorial appointment at the University of Auckland in the Department of Chemistry. Perera’s expertise is in the chemistry and technology of food processing, and his work includes research on functional foods such as soy isoflavones and vitamin D, and changes during processing and development of novel methods of processing, including energy-efficient methods of drying. 46 ANNUAL DIRECTORY 2017 DR JOHAN VERBEEK (Waikato University) Dr Johan Verbeek conducts research focussing on using waste materials or by-products from other processes to produce value-added products. The most significant example is a bio-polymer produced from bloodmeal, which is a by-product of the red meat industry. This can be used to manufacture injection-moulded plastic products for use in agriculture and horticulture. DR BRUCE CAMPBELL (Plant & Food Research) Bruce Campbell is the chief operating officer at Plant & Food, and holds a PhD in Plant Sciences from the University of Sheffield. His research interests are in biotechnology, genetics, sustainability and climate change. Campbell is responsible for the science staff within the organisation. PHILIP GREGAN (New Zealand Wine) Philip Gregan has been chief executive since the organisation was established in 2002 as the national representative for the country’s grape and wine sectors.
