LEADING THE WAY IN VALUE ADD SCIENCE FOR FOOD EXPORTS Cawthron Analytical Services is not your ordinary testing laboratory…along with its team of expert analytical chemists, it also has access to some of the best and brightest scientists in New Zealand. Having those close science and research links means Cawthron’s analytical team is able to provide the full spectrum of food safety, testing and quality services to customers right across the value chain, from the research and development stage through to testing and accreditation. “Increasingly exporters are tapping into our science knowledge, in addition to our routine testing services, to help them extract maximum value from their existing products,” Cawthron Analytical Services’ business development manager Augusta van Wijk says. “They can see the benefits of having an accredited testing laboratory attached to a world-class scientific research organisation.” Good examples of how this works in practice is the work the company does with the aquaculture and dairy sectors. Cawthron has been working with the dairy industry for more than ten years, initially establishing IgG testing of colostrum at the request of industry, to now being able to offer a range of specialised analyses to assist customers exporting high value nutrition products and ingredients to 24 ANNUAL DIRECTORY 2017 international markets. “Having the expertise and capability to respond to our specific needs for developing and running non-standard assays is very beneficial to us,” Dr Colin Prosser of the Dairy Goat Co-operative says. The aquaculture industry is another major sector benefiting from Cawthron’s analytical expertise and research capability.Research scientists have been working closely with the aquaculture industry for two decades now, and have identified an opportunity to further support the sector through a research project that aims to add even more value to the iconic Greenshell™ mussel. Cawthron scientist Dr Matt Miller is leading a research programme in collaboration with Sanford, Massey University and the Christchurch Clinical Trials Trust. Funded by the High Value Nutrition National Science Challenge, the study will generate scientific evidence of the health benefits of Greenshell mussels, and assist the industry to identify and develop optimal mussel-based functional food products that will appeal to the emerging market of wealthy, aging, health conscious consumers – predominantly in Asian markets. “The aim of this research is to assist the transition of Greenshell mussels from the relatively low price Food TesTing ENSurING yOur PrOduCtS’ INtEGrIty ANd QuALIty Photo: Wayne Barrar Cawthron Institute Ph: +64 3 548 2839 lab@cawthron.org.nz www.cawthron.org.nz • Method development and validation team • IANZ (ISO) accreditation • GMP certified for Nutraceuticals • Label claims • Food safety • Shelf life testing • Vitamin testing • Export certification HM143 ‘commodity protein’ to a market position where these products are valued for their unique nutrition and functional properties,” Sanford general manager innovation Andrew Stanley says.
