You’re tucking into your butter chicken, hearty shepherd’s pie or scrambled eggs when the worst happens. A hair… inside your mouth…and even worse, it’s not yours. What’s your response? YUCK! But new research has found eating hair or having it in your food can actually be dangerous. Human hair is made up of the protein keratin, which makes up the outer layer of the skin and nails, and is not generally a problem. However, research by the National Institute of Science, Technology and Development Studies in New Delhi on human hair waste says hair contains a number of toxic chemical contaminants that can transmit toxic substances. In fact, it is one of the leading physical contaminants in food, along with stones, metal pieces, insect parts and rodent droppings, which can result in foodborne illnesses like cholera, typhoid and jaundice. Human hair is termed a physical as well as a microbiological contaminant, because it can lead to the growth of micro-organisms in the food. Oil, sweat, residue of hair treatment chemicals and shampoos, dyes or any other organic matter sticking to hair becomes a breeding ground for pathogens when left in processed foods for long periods of time. India’s Food Safety Helpline founder Dr Saurabh Arora says apart from the risk of choking on hair in food or vomiting, human hair can transmit ringworm as well as fungal infections such as Staph aureus. “Make sure anybody who cooks for you wears hairnets, headbands, caps, beard covers or other effective hair restraints,” Arora says. “Prevention is better than cure any day.” Spray Nozzle Engineering has been a regional innovator in safer hose handling, wash down, CIP and water saving technology for more than 25 years. As the name behind the most widely used wash down technology used in food, dairy, pharma and bottling plants, Spray Nozzle Engineering holds more than 30 patents worldwide in the spraying and cleaning sector, with offices in New Zealand and Melbourne, and distributors worldwide. The company recently released the patented Safe-R-Reel stainless safety wash down reel device. Removing hose off the floor is crucial in removing trip hazards, but also many reels rewind too fast, causing further hazards to personnel and equipment. To overcome this, some reels use a ‘wet’ clutch system, but using ‘non-food approval’ oil that can leak or contaminate. The Reel Tech Safe-RReel, however, uses a patented ‘no fluid’ mechanical speed return brake system that retracts hose at a safe speed, making it one of the safest on the market today. It is now used by the world’s largest dairy and food groups.
