Apple has revealed it is looking at the technology, which could let food vendors embed RFID tags with nutritional information about specific foods which can then be transmitted to an iPhone or Apple Watch. The tags are already used in several industries including pharmaceuticals to help track medicines through warehouses. Apple’s patent over the technology also includes methods of measuring whether a user has eaten part or all of their food, along with sensors to measure heart rate or motion that can detect when a person is eating and whether their arm is moving towards their mouth. The data can be integrated into a health app that can set specific daily calorie goals, and make personalised recommendations. Apple is yet to announce a timeline for the technology, but it is believed it could be an addition to the company’s rumoured line of wearables that are only active when worn, or its next generation of smartphones and watches. The app would rely entirely on widespread adoption of RFID technology and the uptake from food vendors. An integrated food park in Visakhapatnam in India processing different varieties of crops is hoping to encourage upcoming food processing units by providing core, non-core and basic infrastructure at a purpose-built 37-acre facility in Varakattu Village. The North Coastal Integrated Food Park is aimed at integrating food processing infrastructure from farm to the market, as well as making food processing an all-season activity. It is expected to include units catering for the processing of cashew, strawberries, pineapple, jackfruit and tamarind, among others. Spokesman Rama Raju says the centre will provide dry and finished good warehouses, cold storage, sorting areas, grading, packing lines, common equipment for small entrepreneur units, workers’ hostels, changing rooms and marketing support. It will also include a training centre, testing laboratory, restaurant, sewage and effluent treatment plants and rain harvest pond. “When this type of integrated food park is developed, farmers will have a huge production of raw cashew nuts, and when more cashew processing units are coming up in this type of food park, employment for around 5000 people will be available,” he says.
