WHOLEHEARTED (Inspiring Real Food for Every Day) by Kelly Gibney (Beatnik Publishing, $49.99, available now) 12 APRIL 2017 WHOLEHEARTED (Inspiring Real Food for Every Day) THIS MONTH’S LUCKY SUBSCRIBER, Mike Coory of Zealand Health will receive all three books reviewed on this page. B O O K R E V I E W S A food book author called Lentil is probably the most appropriate name I’ve ever come across, but the message she and husband Matt are conveying in this stunningly-presented book is very serious and incredibly impacting. Educators, bloggers and advocates for sustainability, the couple live on their Tahbilk farm in Victoria and sell produce to Melbourne restaurants, as well as regularly taking a van-load of vegetables and fruit to sell on the streets. At some stage, the pair decided to write a book…and we should all be thankful for it. This book describes how to produce food, with advice and projects scattered throughout, and includes more than 100 wholefood recipes such as how to prepare and sprout grains, making sourdough culture, preserving and pickling. The ‘Grow’ chapter shows how to grow in whatever space you have; ‘Gather’ explains how to forage for things like mushrooms and wild fruits; and ‘Nurture’ looks at raising your own animals from chickens to bees and cows. It’s a fantastic resource covering growing, cooking, preserving, trading and living well – in fact, it’s one of those gems that we should be giving to every secondary student about to head out into the nutritional world. Do you remember your Grandma’s cookbook shelf, where you could run your hands over the hardback covers with a rough parchment feel? The days of producing cookbooks made to last the 80 or so years needed are long gone, so it’s a treat to handle this lovely ‘retro’ book written by Auckland food writer, stylist and photographer Kelly Gibney. Filled with more than 100 inspiringly accessible wholefood recipes, Gibney’s goal with the book is to show people that healthy food can be “as full of joy and flavour as they are of nutrients.” Her selections run the full gamut – gluten-free, sugar-free, dairy-free, vegetarian and vegan options – and she’s covered the lot…from breakfast through to dinner and dessert. As well as appearing extensively in publications such as Little GROWN & GATHERED (Traditional living made modern), by Matt and Lentil Purbrick (MacMillan, $49.99, available now) Treasures and Dish, Gibney opened and ran the Golden Dawn bar in Auckland, and is an owner of Little Red, a coffee shop in a refurbished shipping container in Waipu, Northland. Most recently she worked on the Taste of Auckland Festival…so this young lady knows exactly what she’s talking about. I have to say that Grandma’s cookbooks – written by the likes of Alison Holst – didn’t have authors’ bio pics with the tattoos Gibney sports, but that only counteracts the old-fashioned feel of the cover and reaches out to a new generation. GROWN & GATHERED (Traditional living made modern) First of all, this woman makes me sick. How is it possible to write seven (yes, seven!) best-selling cookbooks, appear on the Australian version of The Project regularly as well as other current affairs shows, speak around Australia on nutrition and general wellbeing, and have a huge online following… and LOOK THAT GOOD?! Berry quite literally glows, so it follows that she must be practicing what she preaches. Eating the right food, Berry says, is a crucial piece of the health puzzle…complete with herbal teas, lifestyle tips, exercises and activities. If you want to keep out the ‘baddies’ and support your immune health, her Lucky Lamb Chops with Green Pea Mash or Coconut Fruit Whip with Almond and Seed Toffee will help. Need to feed your hair, skin and nails? The Raw Rainbow Pasta with Brazil Nut and Spinach Pesto or Salted Macadamia Nut Slice is what she’d recommend. This is a book for all ages, and beautifully presented…just like the author herself. FOOD TO MAKE YOU GLOW, by Lola Berry (MacMillan, $39.99, available now) FOOD TO MAKE YOU GLOW
