W O R K S H O P A CUT ABOVE THE COMPETITION Evacut offers a couple of options in its standard drill range. One has a black finish and the other is bright/silver. The black jet (also known as ‘Blue Bullet’ under the Sutton Tools brand) has often been maligned as inferior when consumers have confused it with a poor-quality low carbon steel product that is commonly supplied by some Asian and Eastern European manufacturers. The fact is, according to Evacut, that either option from Evacut is made from exactly the same base material. “We use M2 high speed steel (HSS) sourced from quality suppliers,” says Evacut. After the grinding process, the drills are left silver/bright. The black finish is an extra steam temper which produces a ferrous oxide coating and blackens the surface. For general drilling applications the black finish provides significant productivity 48 September 2017 and performance benefits at no extra cost. This is largely due to the microscopic pitting of the surface, allowing lubricants and coolants to adhere and reduce friction and heat in the cut. The only circumstances where silver drills have superior performance is with sticky material like aluminium and brass where it can bind to the cutting edge, in this situation the smooth surface is a benefit. Whichever one you choose, you can be assured you are receiving a quality product says the company. Sutton Tools NZ Ltd has been making cutting tools in New Zealand for more than 50 years and was one of the first manufacturers in Australasia to achieve ISO9001 certification. EN233
