BAKING SPECIAL EXPO A MUST-SEE If a trip to Las Vegas is on your bucket list, it might be time to get packing and combine business with pleasure. The most comprehensive event in the United States for the grain-based food industry is set to take place in the city in October…and its proportions are awe-inspiring. More than 20,000 baking professionals and 800 exhibiting companies from 100 different countries across every segment of the industry will flock to the city to attend the EXPO, with unparalleled access to tools, technologies and resources for bakery manufacturers and businesses. To be held at the 700,000 sq ft Las Vegas Convention Center, the Expo – run by the American Bakers Association and the Baking Equipment Manufacturers and Allieds – is recognised around the world as a ‘working show’ where millions of dollars of business is conducted daily. It is run every three years. Special features and events this year include a competition between six teams of the US’s top professional cake decorators to challenge each other in imagination, artistry and skills. A cold storage industry pavilion will link bakers to the best of global innovation, whilst a ‘Great American Pie Festival’ will supply a near endless supply of pies from around the world. The innovation showcase will put baking’s newest advances on full display, including ingredients, equipment, packaging and safety products being shown for the first time. A Pizza Village will see one of the largest American industries in a unique townhall-style pavilion, with ‘pizzathletes’ competing in freestyle pizza acrobatics, and the Tortilla Industry Association will offer cutting-edge technical programmes to capitalise on the baking industry’s fastest growing market segment. More than 800 leading manufacturers and suppliers will showcase their new range of products and resources, including production equipment and baking supplies, ingredients, packaging and systems, refrigeration, sanitation, computerised technologies, transport and distribution. The Expo will also feature educational programmes involving industry experts and leaders that will assist in improving products, optimising production and increasing profits. With attendance in 2013 up 13 per cent, this year’s event is expected to break records.
