The company, based in Auckland with vineyards in the Hawke’s Bay and Marlborough, has produced 100 magnums and 330 standard bottles of special edition 2013 Cavernet Sauvignon to celebrate. When 2013 proved to be such an outstanding vintage for Babich, the family set aside a small parcel of grapes to use for the anniversary. The result comes in a designed box with a certificate personally signed by managing director Joe Babich, adding to its authenticity and uniqueness. Each bottle has an ultra-high end cork and is hand waxed. “Our viticulturist identified the best rows and then hand-picked fruit was crafted into a small volume of exceptional wine – aged for 18 months in two barriques of French oak,” Babich says. Senior winemaker Adam Hazeldine says the wine is sweetly perfumed with violet and blackberry. “Hints of vanilla and smoky cedar join to create a warm and embracing aroma. Sweet floral and dark fruit elements continue on the exceptionally smooth and dense palate. Complex flavours reminiscent of fruit cake, cocoa, leather and tobacco all combine in an harmonious wine that is both serious and beguiling.” Given the limited number of bottles produced, there is a strict allocation of this exclusive wine. The recommended retail price in NZ$ is $399 (for 750ml) and $999 (for 1500ml). For more information on the Babich Wines 100 year anniversary, and the limited edition wines. Visit babichwines.co.nz. There has been a long standing relationship with the wine industry, particularly with some of its major players who were involved in the creation of the Glass Packaging Forum (now part of the wider Packaging Forum Inc). There are still many wineries who do not understand the validity of this relationship. Those initially involved were either major players in their own right or related to major breweries who responded to the Government’s call-to-action to deal with the issue of waste consumer glass packaging in 2004 and avoid probable legislation. They played a significant role in the process that was developed between the glass packaged goods industry and central government. Now the situation has evolved further, with many new participants from the wine industry… but the numbers are still modest when compared with all enterprises involved in the market place. With wider expectations from both the community and government, there has been much focus on how to minimise the ongoing risk of regulation. Product stewardship is not just an idea but a programme that should be adopted by all commercial entities, particularly those who provide or use packaging. There is also still a need to counter those in the community who believe regulation is necessary, and that industry initiatives are not adequate. The Glass Packaging Forum (GPF), with a glass recovery rate of 73%, believes a voluntary approach is effective, particularly when it is monitored by Government. The GPF directly involves itself with individual wineries and collectively when supporting wine festivals and concerts. It is now time for a greater proportion of the wine industry to support its colleagues and ensure that the achievements to date continue.
