From Beer to Bonneville salt at 267km/h Project 64’s Mini smashes land speed record in true Kiwi style Beer had a lot to do with it. The initial idea, that is. When two good mates – Guy Griffith and Garry Orton – were sitting around having a quiet bevvy, one piped up, “Let’s break the land speed record.” The other, rolling with the idea that was being lightly lubricated with the pale ale, may have said, ‘Yeah, nah,’ but that can’t be confirmed, but what we do know is that he evolved the idea to a concept that is very, very Kiwi: ‘Yeah, let’s do it, but nah, we don’t do it in anything flash instead smash it with a 1964 Mini Cooper S’. They set a target then made it bloody hard for themselves. We know a former Invercargillian, sure to be smiling since Nelson’s Project 64 set its first record on the Bonneville salt, Utah, in 2012, and the legend that is Burt Munro would be the first to 16 September 2016
