TECHNOLOGY AND MACHINERY INVESTMENT
MEANS THE SKY IS THE LIMIT
Investment to deliver. That’s what
Winston & Gordon Davies Ltd (WGD)
has done to secure and expand upon its
position in the New Zealand engineering
and manufacturing landscape.
The company is celebrating 50 years of
dedication to its profession; one built on exact
standards and customer focus.
“With technological advancements continuing to
increase, the possibilities of precision engineering
are gloriously infinite – who knows what WGD will
be capable of producing in another 50 years,”
says WGD’s managing director Kevin Schicker.
The company has “put its money where its mouth
is” through the purchase of its second 5-axis
machine. The latest, Mazak machining centres.
“Since the instalation of the Mazak, we’ve added
significant capacity for our customers,” says
Kevin.
“WGD has invested in latest technology
machinery to maintain leadership in the industry
and further push the capability of the workshop to
ensure WGD continues to deliver quality product
at industry best standards. Five axis machining
is a significant step in achieving this and the
latest installation of a Mazak Variaxis J500 5X
Smooth also ensures we quickly got the machine
productive.”
The installation of the machine was accompanied
by WGD’s senior CNC operator spending two
weeks with Mazak in Japan. It was important for
the Auckland-based high-precision machining
company to have the machine up and running to
full capacity as fast as possible,
“WGD recently installed a Mazak VariAxis J-500
5 Axis Vertical Machining Center which offers
cost-effective and efficient multi-surface part
machining and single-setup processing. This
is achieved through fast, high-rigidity spindles
as well as a high accuracy rotary/tilt table,”
says Mazak distributor NZ Machine Tools. “The
J-500 handles all processes from raw material
input through to final machining providing
dramatic reductions in lead times and improved
workpiece accuracy by the elimination of
multiple setups.”
The machine has quickly become an integral
component in doing things the right way and
future proofing WGD for things to come.
“This machine was truly out of the box and we
were up and running within days. The double
column construction makes it a very rigid 5 axis
machine” says Brian Preston, senior machinist
at WGD.
“The Mazatrol Smooth is great. While we are
mainly programming off-line, the features of the
Smooth make the time to completion so much
easier, so the ‘Done-in-One’ theme that Mazak
promote is a reality.”
In addition to G-code (EIA/ISO) programming,
Mazak’s Smooth controls include Mazatrol
conversational programming capabilities that
make it possible for less experienced operators
to develop machining programs quickly and
easily while out on the shop floor. A wizard-like
programming mode that completely bypasses
the need for conventional G-coding skills,
Mazak's MAZATROL works by allowing operators
to answer conversationally displayed questions
concerning the intended workpiece.
